My life has been a blur (a glorious blur, but a blur nonetheless) for the past week and a half. I’ve been taking care of my grandkids and, honey, I’ve been cooking, playing, bathing, reading books, putting kids to bed, styling 4-year-old girl hair (tough stuff for Boy Mamas like me), fixing snacks, cleaning up after snacks, talking to kids, listening to kids, and answering more kids questions per day than I have in I can’t remember when. And I am so happy and so grateful that I got to do every single bit of it. It was awesome.
But after the grandkids went home, I said to my tired self, “Laurie, old girl, you did a good job. You deserve a couple of days off to rest and enjoy a little freedom.” So, I parked myself in Bill’s recliner and tanked up on some HGTV, Food Network and several back-to-back episodes of Say Yes To The Dress.
The next day, after logging in a few hours of light housework and laundry, I decided to continue my well-deserved pursuit of freedom. So, once again, I planted myself in Bill’s comfy chair and watched the entire eight-hour Lonesome Dove mini-series. The entire EIGHT HOURS.
But even after two full days of freedom, strangely enough, I still didn’t feel completely rested or renewed. “Laurie,” I said to myself, “you are SO old and SO out of shape.”
The next morning, I returned to my old routine. Had a quick breakfast, fixed my coffee, and went back to my bedroom to spend some time with God in His Word. After about ten minutes or so, I noticed something: I felt rested and renewed. When I closed my Bible, I spent a few more minutes in prayer. And when I got up, I felt . . . free. And energized. And strong.
You know what? Freedom – real freedom – isn’t just doing or not doing what you want (like spending two entire days vegging out in front of the TV). Freedom is what we get when we get into God’s Word. It’s the freedom David described in Psalm 119:
”I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments.” Psalm 119:45 NLT
How about you? Was your weekend of freedom and R&R less than successful? Are you heading into another crazy busy week saying something to yourself like, “Girl, you are SO old and SO out of shape”?
It’s Monday, precious sister. Before your week spirals into a blur, and before another weekend of “freedom” comes and goes, get back into your old routine. Get into God’s Word today. And discover like I did that you will never be too old or out of shape to enjoy true freedom and real R&R God’s way!
Walking in freedom, feeling kinda young, and praying for you . . .
